Meet Sacramento Born, Roseville Raised, Deborah Fiddyment, Daughter of Fiddyment Farms Founders David and Dolly Fiddyment

February 13th, 2019 by

Pistachios… Joy, longevity, opportunity, and legacy. Not typical words you think of when you hear the word pistachios, but to Deborah Fiddyment, pistachios are more than just nuts. Born in Sacramento, California and raised in Roseville, California, Deborah says “I grew up with one of the best childhoods anyone could ever have. I was following Dad around the moment I could walk.” She enjoyed being outside and exploring the acres of land her family owned in Roseville, where her parents, David and Dolly Fiddyment, started growing pistachios.

Growing up Deborah learned the ways of pistachios and growing trees first hand from her father. “I would climb the trees and my Dad would put tarps down, then I would shake the branches and the seeds would rain down,” she explained, thinking about her younger work days. The rhythm of her day would start with getting up in the morning and simply going outside. Pruning trees on a warm winter day with headphones on and sheers in hand was the type of day Deborah looked forward to. She enjoyed driving the tractor and working the forklift, any piece of equipment fascinated her. Every aspect of pistachio farming from growing and harvesting is something she absolutely loved. “I always loved growing things, Dad says I’m the better farmer,” she said having grown over 360,000 seedlings. Everything kept her intellectually and physically challenged. Above all, she loved working with her Father. “It’s absolutely my passion – it’s in my blood.”

Deborah graduated from California State University, Chico with a bachelor’s degree in Spanish, then went on to pursue her master’s degree in Ag Business at California State University, Fresno.  On her weekends during school, she would drive home to take things over at the ranch for two days so her father could have a break and recharge. Those days would consist of climbing up on the dryers, checking temperatures and making sure loads were going in correctly. She spent a lot of time helping her father run the business and keeping things going. Through all the years of work, one special memory that sticks out to her is sitting on the floor of her living room, watching tv and tying bows on burlap bags with her mom Dolly and younger sister Diane. Each one of the signature green burlap bags was hand sewn and tied, a tradition Fiddyment Farms continues to this day.

“Pistachios have a specific smell – when I would come back from college and see an orchard, sometimes there would be extra growth at the base of the trees that had been neglected. You can break those bits off, so I’d break one off and the smell of that was just – I’m home.”
– Deborah Fiddyment

Along with Deborah’s life long passion for pistachios and farming, she currently attends weekly Rotary meetings with her father, David, who has never missed a Rotary meeting in his seventy-two plus years of attending. Deborah gained a passion for these meetings and was sponsored by a fellow Rotarian to become one herself. She is serious in her devotion to being a Rotarian and feels pride in continuing the tradition alongside her Father.

The company her parents built has gone through many changes over the last fifty years since it was started in 1968. Today she feels the company is invigorating and that the possibilities are endless. Deborah expresses that her pride in the company lies with the loyalty of its employees and that she is thankful for the sacrifices and tenacity her parents had in getting them through good times and tough. Today, she and her sister are the next generation of leaders in the business, Deborah stated it is an honor working with her sister, Diane, and carrying on their fathers’ company for years to come.

“We have integrity, appreciation towards our customers and supporters, and deep family pride. We’re the best.”
– Deborah Fiddyment.

Fiddyment Farms Celebrates 50 Years!

August 2nd, 2018 by

Fiddyment Farms, producer of fine, California grown gourmet pistachios is celebrating 50 years in business!  It all started in 1968 with the first pistachio saplings planted by David Fiddyment on 40 acres in Roseville, California. He and his wife, Dolly, founded Fiddyment Farms to offer high quality, locally grown nuts to nearby communities. Fast forward to now, with customers in all 50 states and internationally, the business has become a leading provider of gourmet pistachios and the Fiddyment brand a symbol of outstanding quality.

David is an industry pioneer being one of the very first to plant pistachios in California. Also an innovator, he designed a hulling machine that hulled and dried the pistachios within minutes after harvest and was used by many pistachio farmers throughout the region. Dolly designed the company’s first classic gift product – the 1-pound, green burlap bag with its signature hand tied tartan ribbon.

In 2004, with growth in mind, the Fiddyments purchased a new, 680-acre pistachio ranch in Kern County, California. The new supply provided opportunity to expand reach and product lines. Today, at 95 and 93, David and Dolly are no longer involved in the day to day operations and have passed on the family business leadership to their daughter, Diane Fiddyment. Diane carries on the family traditions, and guides the Fiddyment team using the same values of integrity, unparallel quality and valued relationships that her parents established long ago.

CEO, Thom Dille, who has worked with the family since 1996, reflected on the company’s fiftieth anniversary by saying, “Our entire Fiddyment team is so proud to be celebrating this 50th year milestone.  The Fiddyments have always exemplified the best of a farming family and their example inspires all of us to carry on the standard for excellence in each and every pistachio we produce today.”

Refrigerating Paste and Butter

July 18th, 2017 by

Pistachio paste and butter are delicate nut products that can potentially go bad if stored poorly. Not to mention, ground pistachios can lose its flavor when exposed to air. There are two ideal ways to store butter and paste once they’re opened.

The Pantry…  Butter and Paste products are “shelf-stable”, so they do fine being stored in a cool and dry place through the expiration date which is on the bottom.

The Refrigerator…  To help with extended freshness, store your open container in the fridge. It may last longer being stored this way.

Keep in mind, these products will separate since we don’t put any ingredients in them to keep the oil from separating from the solid nut parts. When you open your container you might see a layer of oil on top of the paste or butter, totally normal. You can prevent this by refrigerating the product.

Before using either one of these products, it’s recommended to stir or shake up the bottle (which might give you a little arm workout). That way the fluid-ness of the paste and butter maintain an easy to use and eat.

What’s the Difference between Pistachio Paste & Butter?

July 18th, 2017 by

Fiddyment Farms Pistachio Butter and Paste

Pistachio Butter and Paste are both unique pistachio products that we offer! Some people haven’t heard of them or don’t have much experience with them, so it’s natural for anyone to be curious.

Truth is you don’t have to be a famed chef or a food connoisseur to enjoy either one of these products right at home!

You might be wondering which one you should purchase or you might want to know what each of them is used for. Here are some quick points that can guide you:

  • How to use each one… Pistachio Paste is most commonly used and best known for its use in flavoring baked goods, gelato, ice cream, confections, pastries or in gourmet cooking. The Pistachio Butters’ common uses entail eating it spread over foods or as a dip. They are both delicious in their own ways.
  • Let’s talk texture… The paste is specially made to have a very smooth and fluid consistency, making it easy to mix into foods and batters. A natural sweetness is brought out more in the Pistachio Paste, which gives whatever it’s added to a rich pistachio flavor. Pistachio Butter has a thick consistency much like peanut or almond butter.
  • In case you’re wondering about how it’s made… They are both freshly milled, the difference between the two is that the paste is further refined in a longer, multi-step process to get it smoother and more fluid.

A similarity that they both share is that they are both 100% pistachio, there are no fillers or additives such as sugar and food coloring, it’s rich in texture and has a true pistachio taste.
